As part of the International Summer School organized by the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters (FROV) at the University of South Bohemia, students and staff had the opportunity to attend a guest lecture by Prof. Dr. Hab. Silviu Miloiu from Valahia University of Târgoviște, welcomed on behalf of FROV by Prof. Martin Pšenička, Vice-Dean for International Relations.
Prof. Miloiu presented his research on "Romania, the European Economic Community (EEC), and the Common Fisheries Policy in the 1980s." Drawing on extensive archival research conducted in Brussels, Florence, and Romania, he reconstructed the diplomatic negotiations through which communist-era Romania sought access to EEC fishing waters, driven by the decline of its domestic fishing resources — offering a fascinating, lesser-known chapter of EEC–Romanian relations during the Cold War.
The lecture also addressed a pressing contemporary issue: the pollution of the Black Sea and the Danube, and its impact on fish populations. Prof. Miloiu noted that the academic community was once more vocal on this topic, and called on today's researchers to speak up again and help bring the issue back onto the EU agenda.
We at the University of South Bohemia warmly thank Prof. Miloiu for his lecture, the engaging discussion that followed, and above all for his visit. Moments like this show how the KreativEU alliance fosters interdisciplinary dialogue and deepens cooperation across our partner institutions - something we deeply value.
