Breda is my anchor
"The city has played an enormous role in my creative development," says Robbert van de Corput (Hardwell). Becoming an honorary citizen of Breda was "one of the most emotional moments in my career." The internationally acclaimed DJ recognises Breda as an ideal environment for nurturing young talent: "There are many initiatives that encourage young talent. Those kinds of accessible opportunities are so important." This exemplifies how local cultural ecosystems can serve as catalysts for international creative excellence and innovation.

Core competencies for event management professionals
Hardwell emphasises three critical skill sets for the contemporary events industry: adaptability, digital proficiency, and strategic networking. "The events industry is close-knit and built on trust. Show that you have passion for what you do," he advises. He observes encouraging developments within the sector: "Organisers are much more conscious about sustainability and inclusivity. This makes events stronger as a community." These insights reflect the industry's evolution towards more responsible and inclusive practices.

The applied education connection
Would the Leisure & Events Management programme have enhanced his career trajectory? "It would certainly have been valuable. As an artist, you're also an entrepreneur—you run a brand, consider show concepts, create experiences, develop marketing strategies." This perspective highlights the entrepreneurial dimension of creative careers and the value of applied education in developing holistic professional competencies.

A blueprint for creative education partnerships
Hardwell's progression from local cultural participant to global industry leader demonstrates how regional creative infrastructures can produce internationally recognised talent. His experience offers valuable insights for educational institutions seeking to bridge academic learning with industry innovation, particularly in the creative and cultural sectors.
